Congratulations are in order!

Vicki Jopson —

Nic Schollum has been accepted into the Barcelona International Youth Science Challenge (BIYSC) which is to be held from July 2–12 this year. The programme accepts 150 sixteen to eighteen year old students from around the world.

This two week residential programme gives young scientists the opportunity to immerse themselves in real research projects of their choice. Nic will be part of a group working on "Synthetic Biology: engineering life to innovate Health and Sustainability". He will be working in top research centres, labs and cutting edge scientific facilities, alongside real scientists and researchers.

This is an amazing opportunity that doesn’t just involve the research project but also includes working with students from so many different countries, sightseeing in Barcelona and making some life long like-minded friends. The opening and closing ceremony will be held at La Pedrera-Casa Mila which is a UNCESCO World Heritage site.

After the BIYSC experience, participants will be able to join the Science Fellows’ Community, and will be linked to hundreds of successful and exceptional young scientists, alumni from BIYSC and other Science Programmes. This is a supportive international Community that offers numerous opportunities to stay connected, contact peers or mentors, enhance networking and organize and participate in diverse activities, training and exchanges.

The next step is to work on funding possibilities to help Nic with the cost of the trip, which is only two months away.

Anyone with funding ideas and contacts, please email Mrs Jopson jp@kingshigh.school.nz The help would be greatly appreciated.
