South Island Secondary Schools Water Polo Tournament Results

Vicki Jopson —

Our Lions Water Polo 1st team travelled to Christchurch to compete in the South Island Secondary Schools Water Polo tournament held from March 21-24. King’s were the only boys school from Dunedin to compete in the tournament.

The first game was against Marlborough Boys' High School and apart from a wobbly second quarter, the game was close, however, they lost 6-2. The big game was against St Bede’s College (SBC) who were the eventual winners of the tournament and are quite the powerhouse in South Island Water Polo.

The boys played exceptional defence and held them to one point in the first quarter, but SBC were too strong for us to sustain the efforts. The boys won the following games against Shirley Boys’ High School and SBC B team. This put them in the quarter final with St Andrews College which they lost but it was quite a close match up.

In the end, the boys were placed sixth which is an improvement from last year. With four Junior players and three Year 11 players, the future is looking strong.

Our teams still have the Dunedin competition to complete with semi finals and finals in the coming weeks.

A huge thank you to Cameron Innes, our Coach and Suzie Harrold, our Manager for all their hard work.
