South Island Athletics

Grant Koedyk —

A small group of athletes went to Nelson this year for the South Island Secondary Schools Athletics Champs.

Travelling by van from Dunedin to Nelson was a long journey, which we broke up with an overnight stay in Hanmer Springs.

Events began on Friday afternoon with the Hammer Throw for Joel and Tainui. The other athletes were able to test out the track, which was found to be very hard and unforgiving.

Track events began on the sunny Saturday morning, along with the rest of the field events. There was disappointment for Corey Pope who travelled all the way and made the 100m and 200m finals, only to pull out due to injury. There were some great performances from our King’s athletes (see below) but what stood out the most was the fantastic team spirit throughout the meet.

The long drive home was filled with sing-a-longs and fish n chips to top off an outstanding weekend.
