More Musical Success

Jo Dryden —

As well as Rock Quest last weekend, King’s boys participated in the annual NZCT Chamber Music Contest. The contest is an iconic secondary school musical event held annually throughout the country.

It is a perfect opportunity for young musicians, regardless of standard or experience, to perform Chamber Music (music for small instrumental groups) and to strive towards excellence.

Our talented pianist, Emmanuel Keane, performed on the piano as a member of two groups - ’Shostakovich Trio’ and ‘Are You Chinese’, with fellow musicians from Otago Boys' High School and Kavanagh College. His group ‘Are You Chinese’ won the KBB Award and received a Highly Commended placing. In addition to this, ‘Are We Chinese’, are one of only 13 groups throughout the entire South Island to have been selected from the district competitions to compete in the 'Southern Region Finals' of the Chamber Music New Zealand Annual Competition. This is taking place on the 23rd June in Christchurch. This is an amazing accomplishment for one so young. We wish Emmanuel all the best.

A second group - ‘Grid Composition’ (name inspired by Ms Rozenberg) with members Ryan McCleery, Matthew Wong (Saxophone), Marshall Klenner (Piano) and Josh Tuiavii (Drumkit) were not placed, but received a very positive report from the adjudicator.
