Sports Round-Up

Glenn Dickson —

It's been a busy season for students and staff involved in Winter sports. Thank you to all who have been involved throughout the season whether you were on the sideline, participating, coaching or managing.

Awatea Henry - Boxing - Fight in Christchurch this weekend

Awatea is just 17 but has already amassed 48 Amateur Fights and collected several titles.

This year, he has racked up five straight wins and will be hoping to extend his winning streak at the Canterbury Championships this weekend.

He is fighting the North Island No 1, so there is a lot at stake.

All the very best Awatea.

Otago Secondary Schools Hockey Final - Tuesday 20th August

It was an intense Otago Hockey Final  at the McMillan Centre.

John McGlashan College opened the scoring and held their lead all the way with three minutes left on the clock before our boys equalised with a superb goal by James Nicolson. It then looked like it was heading to a penalty shoot-out to decide the Otago champions. However, with 20 seconds left on the clock John McGlashan finished the last opportunity of the match to take the crown 2-1. King's played their hearts out to produce a brilliant effort.

King's were heavily supported by current and past pupils as well as many parents and friends.

Many thanks to all those who attended.

Congratulations to John McGlashan on taking the title.

Otago Secondary Schools Rugby Final - Saturday 17th August

Having beaten Southland Boys' the previous week for the first time in 20 years, our 1st XV approached the final v Otago Boys' with justified belief at Littlebourne on Saturday. The opening 10 minutes was dominated by Otago Boys' which saw them race out to a 10 nil lead. King's then fought back strongly for the remainder of the first half and scored a try to finish 10-5 down at the break.

Again Otago Boys' started the stronger of the two teams to take control of the match and were worthy winners at the end. King's fought hard right to the very end and finished with two more tries to leave the score at 34-17.

A proud season for the boys, coaches, management and parents, with a lot of lessons learnt to assist us in 2020.

Again thanks to The Pride for all your support.

King's Junior Hockey Final  - Tuesday 20th August

The King's Junior Hockey Team won their final against Bayfield High School 4-1 on Tuesday afternoon.

The boys had an exceptional season, winning all but one of their games and showing excellent sportsmanship throughout all of the games.

The boys were very lucky to benefit from the coaching of Alex Stuart, from the PE School at the University of Otago, this season.
