Water Polo year finishes well

Vicki Jopson —

Last night the three King’s Water Polo teams finished up the year on a high note.

Our Oxford team, made up of three veteran players, Cole Jefferies (Goalie), Azariah Davidson and Lukas Ghidella were joined this term by Magnus Heaphy, Sam Hyde, Carter Smith, Alex Harold, Finn McCutcheon, and Charlie Heller, coached by Daniel Wheeler. They had a great term in the water with the new comers never having played and continued to learn the rules. It was fantastic having this team in the competition.

The Cambridge team, made up of all our Junior players, came away with the win against a strong St Hilda’s Collegiate School team, coached by Ted Menzies. They are off on Monday to Blenheim to compete in the Junior South Island Secondary Schools tournament. The first time we have been able to send a team since 2019 so the boys are very excited to gain valuable tournament experience.

Our Lions A team played Otago Boys' High School A, coming away with the win 4-2 and the trophy.

The closest score all season so it was a good, close game. It was great to have some supporters—other than parents—at the game.

We farewell Year 13 players, Caellan Agnew and Mitchell Wheeler who have been fantastic young men. Special mention to Mitchell, who started dabbling in the team as a Year 9 player.

He has been a Coach and mentor to the rest of the boys. Thank you to both Caellan and Mitchell for being such a big part of our programme.

I want to thank all of the parents who are amazing supporters with such positive attitudes. To our coaches Daniel Wheeler (Oxford), Ted Menzies (Cambridge) and our Head Coach and Old Boy, Cam Innes, THANKS for all your fantastic mentoring and work with our young men.
