Esteemed Old Boy Returns

Jo Harford —

Professor Tony Ballantyne came to speak at our assembly on Thursday.

Tony Ballantyne grew up in South Dunedin, the youngest of 11 children, and came to KHS in 1985. After studying at Otago and Cambridge Universities, he became the Head of Otago’s Department of History and Art History and is now Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Humanities) at Otago.

On Thursday he spoke to the boys about his time at King’s, and how much he loved his time here. He also praised Otago University, in particular the quality of  its Humanities Division and the research programmes, two reasons why he was so keen to return to Dunedin after studying overseas.

He talked about university life and gave some advice to students about how to balance their social and academic lives whilst at university.

This was a timely visit for our Year 13s who attend the Otago University Open Day on Monday.
