Positive Education

Sarah Paine —

Resilience is the inner quality that enables you to pick yourself up after a failure or setback and move forward toward success. But do you have resilience?

As we find ourselves truly entrenched in the school year, numerous courses have completed their initial assessments in both the junior and senior schools, however, you may be among those who didn’t receive the results you hoped for. While receiving results can sometimes be disheartening, it is important to remember that you are not a failure. EVERYONE has failures and setbacks at some point but everyone deals with these setbacks differently. Having resilient skills in your toolbelt can help you deal with these situations and the great thing is these skills can be learned. If you are one to struggle with your setbacks, here is what a resilient student might do:

1. Reflect: a resilient person takes time to reflect and honestly analyse their outcome. Instead of dwelling on what went wrong, focus on what you can learn from the experience. Take some time to reflect on your study habits, preparation, time management skills, and interactions in class with your peers and teacher.

2. Support: another important aspect of resilience is maintaining a positive support network. Reach out to friends, family, or teachers who can offer encouragement and guidance during this time. Are there areas where you may need additional support? Sometimes, just knowing that you're not alone in facing challenges can provide the strength needed to persevere.

3. Self-care: don't forget to practice self-care. Taking care of your physical and mental well-being is essential for building resilience. Make sure to get enough sleep, exercise regularly, and engage in activities that bring you joy and relaxation.

Remember, your worth is not defined by a single assessment result, and there will be countless opportunities ahead to demonstrate your abilities and achieve your goals. Setbacks are temporary, but the skills and resilience you develop by practising these steps, will last a lifetime.
