Exciting recognition for King's students at Dunedin Youth Jazz Festival

Jo Dryden —

Both groups, Queen B and the Swing Kings, (King's and Queen's Jazz Band), and Captain K and the Cool Cats, (King's Jazz Combo) entered again this year.

Captain K and the Cool Cats, led by Emmanuel Keane were first up, entertaining with a slick performance of Take Five by Paul Desmond and Sir Duke by Stevie Wonder.

Queen B and the Swing Kings, directed by Paul Claman, followed, performing their programme of three numbers Turn The Beat Around, Yesterday and Five Foot Two. They took out the award for ‘Winner of Category 3 – Swing’ with their performance of Five Foot Two.

Individual players awarded prizes this year are:

Nikhil Rawat (Year 12) – Best Performance on a Baritone Saxophone

Emmanuel Keane (Year 13) – Most Promising Tenor Saxophonist

Matthew McIlroy (Year 9) – Most Promising Trombonist

A pleasing outcome for what proved to be a difficult year, given covid restrictions disrupting rehearsals, as well as individual sickness running rife.

The Dunedin Youth Jazz Festival was held at Otago Boys' High School on 19th August 2022.
