Year 12 Geography Trip highlights

Harvey Rawlings and Ted Menzies —

Every King's Geography student knows that the Mount Cook trip is a highlight, and last week, 46 students and four staff members had a fantastic time visiting the Mount Cook National Park. The boys enjoyed exploring the South Island High Country while staying at Glentanner, a small campground about 21 kilometres from Aoraki.

We travelled to the Tasman Glacier on the first day and were rewarded with an amazing, scenic view and clear (but chilly) weather. We took advantage of the chance to interview other tourists throughout the trip to gather information for our internals once we got back to school. Additionally, Mr Cushen spent time explaining to us how the massive glacial process shaped the region we were walking through.

Day two was equally fantastic, including a visit to the Hooker Valley Track and an educational presentation at the nearby DOC Centre.

We were all excited about the upcoming helicopter ride when we got back to camp. We ascended in six-person groups, enjoying a breathtaking aerial view of the landscape below. Over 1000 metres up, on Mount Brown, we came to a stop. Before escaping the cold and returning to Glentanner, we lingered in the snow for a while, admiring the breathtaking view. We made our way to the Tekapo Hot Springs that evening to end the tour with some warmth and some delicious food.
