Nick McIvor —

I wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Meri Kirihimete me te Hape Nū Ia. Summer’s here and December will soon race by. We’re in the final phase of the year that was.

Today Juniors were honoured in our Prizegiving ceremonies; these are every bit as significant as the Senior one back on 5 November, as the effort, growth and excellence of these two cohorts were celebrated.

In recent weeks juniors have enjoyed extra programmes across the curriculum, and some service to the community (the beach from Dunedin Rugby Club to St Clair was never cleaner than on 29 November, thanks to Year 9). Year 10 Camps last week covered much of the South Island for outdoor pursuits or access to specialist facilities in Science and Social Science.

We had a raft of successes at King’s in 2019. All were cherished and communicated at important stages along the way. The help and personal investment made by those who believe in who we are and what we do, made the difference. We benefited from a network of people who contributed to our excellence, and we’re proud and appreciative of their efforts. Many as dedicated volunteers. This help was also seen in the great work of: the teaching and management staff who brought the boys through so well, the support staff who created the conditions for high quality teaching and learning, the parents who supported their sons directly or indirectly, the Board that governed effectively, the Old Boys and members of the Charitable Trust who helped our cause in the community, the contractors whose services maintained our plant and vital infrastructure, the business community that provided resources and positive experiences and others in our network who added value to the school. All made King’s a motivated and collaborative place, and enabled us to enrich the lives of our young men. I thank you all for your contributions and look forward to continuing and advancing these positive connections in 2020.

Reaching the end of 2019 we can reflect. For the boys, it’s a time to see where they rose to the challenge and where they need to lift to reach the bar. For my part, and two terms in, I can see where the strengths and opportunities for the future reside with increasing clarity. The heart and fabric of the school are healthy and robust. The spirit of the school remains ambitious. And our education stays fixed firmly on acquisition of the best character, qualifications and personal excellence.

To the young men departing for the last time, be as proud of yourself and what you’ve achieved at King’s as we are, and value the friendships that you now have; many of these will endure. Continue to grow an inquisitive and independent mind, and a good reputation. Keep acquiring the knowledge and skills that build your confidence, capability, and credentials. Look to be in the company of good people, and to be defined by your good deeds in the years to come.

Have a fantastic Summer.
