Samoan Language Week

Barbara May —

Talofa lava. The school has enjoyed some events to celebrate Samoan Language Week and proudly flew the Samoan flag from the flagpole in the Quad.

On Monday, Pasifika Dean, David Jenkins primed Steve Salelea and Mahonri Auva’a to kick off the week at Staff Briefing. Steve and Mahonri reminded staff of greetings and some other phrases they might use in class. Staff certainly enjoyed following Mahonri’s actions as Steve sang Father Abraham in Samoan. There were lots of laughs and it certainly set us off in a positive manner for the week. Later in the week, John Salisbury also reminded staff of key points for pronouncing Pasifika sounds and words.

Steve Salelea and Christian Fogavai inspired Dunedin North Intermediate (DNI) students, teaching them the Sāsā. Many thanks to DNI for the video clip.

On Thursday, Trevor Elisara, Fatai Koloi, Andre Mata’afa, Mosese Palu and Kalani Vanisi enjoyed making Chop Suey. They sold this delicious lunch to staff and students.

To finish off the week, the boys wore their ie faitaga as part of their school uniform to celebrate their pride in their Pacific roots.
