The Big Sing 2019

Kris White —

The Big Sing is New Zealand’s largest choral event and is a highlight for secondary school choirs. This year we took two choirs to the South Canterbury and Otago Regional Festival.

The choirs are required to present a varied 10-minute programme, including at least one New Zealand / Pacifica composition. In the evening each choir comes back to the stage to showcase their favourite item in a gala concert. Both choirs achieved commendations this year and ACafellas walked away with the trophy for the Spirit of the Festival. My last words to ACafellas as they walked onto the stage was ‘enjoy it, have fun”. Perhaps on reflection they had too much fun as they hammed up their version of If I Fell by Lennon McCartney.

I am immensely proud of the boys and their efforts but I do have say a very large thank you to James Ak Yek (Yr 13) and Emmanuel Ventura (Yr 12) who taught both choirs a Samoan routine.
