Tournament Week Report

Dave Conrad & Michael Wesseling —

Reports from various sports have been coming through throughout the week. Below is an update from Dave Conrad received this afternoon with the news of our Junior A Football team....

I have just arrived back from Timaru with the news that the Junior A Football team have been crowned winners of the NZSS Junior Tournament in Tauranga after the game against Westlake Boys High was a draw at full-time and extra time was needed. George Bates scored the winner from a Noah Scott left footed corner to win 1-0. The game was played in atrocious conditions and the team coped admirably. This was a magnificent effort from the team against some quality footballing schools and the future of Football at King's looks great!

The 1st XI in their final against Kapiti College in Christchurch also went to extra time after it was all locked up at 2-2 at full-time and then still 2-2 after extra time. The team ended up losing in a penalty shootout 4-3. Hard luck boys, it just wasn't your day but we are very proud of your efforts.

The U15 Rugby team finished its tournament in 3rd place after beating Marlborough BHS 36-22. Their first loss of the season was to eventual winners of the tournament, Shirley BHS (7-10). While they will be bitterly disappointed, the boys can reflect back on an outstanding season overall.

1st X1 Hockey are still going strong at the Rankin Cup in Hamilton with today's match against Westlake Boys High resulting in a 4-1 victory.
Friday, the team play Timaru BHS for a chance to play off for 9/10th place if they manage to get the win.

Basketball Senior A team are not faring too well, having lost their three opening games in the SISS Competition. Losing in overtime to Papanui HS was a bit  gut wrenching.

Ice Hockey team started strongly with a 6 - 1 win over Dunstan, a strong team that we out-played with our passing.  A loss that afternoon to Wakatipu meant we had to win the remaining games against the Christchurch teams to make the final. A 3 - 0 win over STAC and a 6 - 3 win over Christchurch Boys' meant we would see Wakatipu again in the finals.

We started the final against Wakatipu strong by scoring the first goal, they retaliated with two quick goals. We were unable to get the lead back and the game finished 1 - 3 to them. Second was a good result in the tournament with such strong competition.
