Aurora Science Fair 2021

Haji Higashitani —

King's students demonstrate a high calibre across the range of Science-related questions and projects.

Three of our students were given the opportunity to compete in the annual Aurora Science Fair at the Otago Museum.

The competition was tough this year, with students from all over Otago entering a wide variety of projects. Our boys were thrown some tough questions from the judging panels, but were unphased, and demonstrated the high calibre of students at King’s High School. The winners were announced last Sunday, and the results are as follows:

  • Alex McKeever in 9Ko won the Australasian Corrosion Association Award and the Dodd-Walls Centre Prize for Physics-related projects.
  • Emmanuel Highsted in 10Jf was awarded the Aurora General Prize.
  • Jacob Smith in Year 13 was awarded the Aurora General Prize, the Plant and Food Prize, and the University Department of Botany Prize.

When I asked what he would spend his prize money on, Alex McKeever said he would reinvest some of the money into an Aquaponics Project he is currently working on.

Could this be a possible winning project in next year’s Science Fair? Only time will tell.
