Summer Reading!

Bridget Schaumann —

Every year the King’s Library provides bags of books for students to take home for the holidays. Last year we made over 30 bags for our students, both juniors and seniors. There are lots of advantages to having books to read over summer.

There is a lot of research to show that maintaining reading over the summer avoids The Summer Reading Slump. Students maintain the levels of reading achievement that they have gained in the school term. Reading is also a nice break away from screens.

Students who love to read are able to keep themselves in books with a reading bag and they can provide a variety of books which extend and challenge the reader.  Having books in the home is a great way for families to share reading and talk about the books they are reading.

Students can get a head start on next year by reading books which will work for their NCEA English standards.

King’s students also have access 24/7 to the eplatform which has both ebooks and eAudiobooks that can be read on any device.

If you would like your son to sign up for summer reading they can do so on this form. Or by going to the library and writing their name on the list.
