40 Hour Famine

Noah Scott —

During the Covid-19 pandemic a quarter of a billion people continued to starve in Africa and we have an opportunity to help.

The 40 Hour Famine is a youth movement held every year where 90,000 young Kiwis band together to fight against injustice.

In 2019, $1.8 million was raised for South Sudanese refugee communities. This year we’re raising funds to fight hunger and injustice in Malawi. 71.9% of Malawians are subsistence farmers, which means they grow all the food that they eat rather than shop for it. One bad harvest, due to drought or flooding, can mean the difference between surviving and children going to bed hungry.

Our climate is changing because of our actions yet the people of Malawi are suffering from the consequences. We must act now, so help us to build resilient and sustainable farming and reduce the impact of climate change on these communities.

I realise that many of us have been impacted financially by the Covid-19 pandemic. I understand this, but nevertheless, I encourage you to join me in raising awareness and money for the people of Malawi. If all you’re able to muster is $5 then that is great because if we all donated $5 then this school could generate more than $5,000.

Even if you’re not able to donate anything, I still encourage you to deny yourself, or complete a challenge for the 40 Hour Famine Weekend of June 5-7. There are endless amounts of things to do like the standard going without food for 40 hours, or 400 push ups in 40 hours, 40 good deeds around the home, picking up 400 pieces of rubbish, just get creative!

Once you have decided what you’re going to do, start spreading the news to your family and friends, gently asking them to donate if they have the means. Also, you must not forget to sign up here: www.worldvision.org.nz/connect/40-hour-famine/. Join the King’s High School fundraising group, create your own profile and get to work!

We are blessed to live in this beautiful and wealthy country, and this is an opportunity for us to come together and use our means to help our brothers and sisters in Malawi who live in far more challenging circumstances.
