King’s Lions’ Sport – Winter Tournament Week Report

Glenn Dickson —

Week six saw several King’s Lions' sports teams perform in the annual Winter Sports Tournament Week.

1st XI Football  – First

King’s Lions' 1st XI Football made the big trek north to Auckland to compete in the Malcolm Cowie Cup at Pakaranga Football Club.

A tough ask confronted this group being required to play eight games in five days. The results table for King’s would stand as seven wins, one draw with 18 goals for and three against. Led by Mr McPhail, the Brian Clough of King’s Football and Max Davidson as Captain the team went on to beat St Andrews College 1-0 in the semifinal and then over came Burnside 1-0 in the grand final.

What was most special about this goal was that it came from the boot of our Captain Max Davidson via a penalty. It was a very fitting conclusion for Max in his final year as well as a team that had worked exceptionally hard over the week. Congratulations to all involved and a very special thank you to Mr McPhail, Miss Hyndman, and Mr Conrad.

1st XI Hockey – Fifth

King’s Lions' 1st XI Hockey travelled to Christchurch to compete in the Johnson Cup. Having enjoyed a very successful period in King’s Hockey, our current 1st XI group have worked hard through what most would call a rebuilding phase where the development of players for the future has been a high priority. The team finished fifth overall, dishing up many attacking performances, typical of a King’s team which only sustained one loss overall. By the closest of margins, the team missed out on a semifinal spot but gave a strong account of themselves and should hold their heads very high. Thank you to Mr Greenfield for leading the team this year.

1st Basketball – Tenth

King’s Lions' Senior 1st Basketball team travelled to Invercargill to compete in the South Island Tournament that also doubles up as a qualifier for the National Tournament.

King’s had a tough pool and two of the teams we faced ended up placing second and third overall.

Over four days we won five games and lost three. This meant that King’s finished tenth out of 24. Special mention must go to our Year 13 players who have been fantastic contributors to King’s Lions' Basketball, Max O'Connor, Leyton 'Aluesi, Lachie Cameron, Oscar Cameron and Tapuvae Faitonu, and a huge thank you to Mr Sullivan, Mr Fielding, and Mr Cameron for leading the team this season.

Junior Lion’s 1st XI Football – Second

Our Junior Lion’s 1st XI had their tournament here in Dunedin and got off to a very tough start against Timaru Boys' going down 5-2. However, this was a team who remained focused, composed themselves and went on to reach the final. Wins came against Otago Boys' High School Year 10's and a semifinal win against Marlborough Boys' College via a penalty shoot-out. We then found ourselves facing Timaru Boys' High School again in the final. Regular time finished at 1-1 and another penalty shoot out was required. Unfortunately, the result did not go King’s way in the final, but this team improved out of sight during the tournament and ended worthy runners up.

A huge thank you to Mr Corkhill for guiding this young group of talented footballers and Mr Sefton for his excellent bookkeeping.

U15 Panthers Rugby  – Second

The conclusion to the U15 South Island Tournament resulted in our U15 Panthers finishing second to Southland Boys' High School 11-8 in the final.

King’s three pool games saw wins against Timaru Boys' High School, Shirley Boys' High School and Nelson College.

The RAIONA from our young men has been exceptional all season and the tournament was no different. Although we missed the mark on our ultimate goal as being crowned King of Te Waipounamu (South Island) this group will cross the street to greet each other many years from now which is always our ultimate goal.

Thank you to our coaches and management team - Paul Miller, Neva Vaitupu, Hayden Smale, Daniel Jephson, Sylvia Jephson, Terry Hill & parents, supporters & THE PRIDE who made the journey with us.
