There's a lot happening in Science

Lisa Fortes and Jeremy White —

10Fs were having a hair raising time in Science investigating the effects of static electricity. While the Year 13 Chemistry class.....

...is starting its study of organic chemistry. This involves a lot of synthesis of different compounds and, at times, involves working with some potentially damaging chemicals.

Before the class started any practical work, it looked at the effect of concentrated sulfuric acid, a common ingredient in organic synthesis, on sugar. The sugar was used to model student flesh; the lesson was "if your hand takes part in a reaction with concentrated sulfuric acid, you no longer have a hand." The boys made it through the lesson safely!
