Mentors inspire and challenge students

Jo Harford —

Our three esteemed mentors, David Elliot, Riki Gooch and Shay Dewey worked with students in the fields of Art, Music and Design & Film-making respectively.

In one day, the mentors created work with a group of students which included a design for a mural at school, an original piece of music and a short film and range of articles for Shay's "My Little Local" App which showcases Dunedin news, events, weather, stories and a range of other material. The work that students produced can be viewed by downloading the App and searching under the "Lifestyle" Section.

At lunchtime, Blair Kennedy, HOD Visual Arts, chaired a panel discussion where the mentors spoke about their journey to success in their respective fields and the opportunities that are available to students today.

After a hectic day of discussion, collaboration and creation, the mentors took to the stage in the evening to talk about their process, both throughout the day with the students, and their own personal work.

The Arts Mentors Project is incredibly valuable and we have been privileged in the last few years to have had talented, passionate practitioners give their time and energy for our students. We would like to thank the mentors of 2018 and look forward to what 2019 brings!
