3D objects designed and created in the world of Digital Fabrication

Andrew Bowen —

Year 10 students who have chosen Design and Visual Communication (DVC) are applying their design skills to the world of Digital Fabrication. The modern design environment has students working on 3D modelling software Fusion 360 to create products that can be digitally fabricated using 3D printers and laser cutter.

Students have the opportunity to create prototypes of their project work without the need to learn the workshop skills to make them. This allows students to focus on developing their design skills and technical drawing skills, the machines take care of the rest. This is becoming a prominent feature of manufacturing in industry. So it benefits students of technology to be proficient in the design process.

In the above photo, from left to right, are Thomas Jenkins, Jeremiah Paton, Maia Paringatai, Xikai Zhang and Lachie Wilden, displaying their card kits that they designed and created. The design brief required them to develop a 2D flat pack card kit that can be laser cut and assembled into a 3D object.
