Pasifika Voices heard

David Jenkins —

Otago Girls' High School launched its inaugural ‘Pasifika Voice’ Competition last Thursday night.

It was a great evening celebrating the importance of student voice and Pasifika culture. Schools from around the region attended the evening with a great crowd to listen to the talented speakers.

King’s had two students enter.  Damian Ioane in Year 9 was the first student up to launch the competition. He gave an amazing three minute speech about the importance of being a Pacific Islander and his family and church. For this he gained 3rd place for the evening.

William Patu, Year 13 gave an exceptional five minute speech about having a New Zealand mother and Samoan father and his perspective of his culture. He was offered a year’s scholarship from the University of Otago for accommodation next year.
