Athletics - South Island

Donna Young —

A small but strong King's Athletics team travelled to Christchurch for the 2021 South Island Athletics Championships, and with great effort and impressive skill achieved a variety of excellent performances and a healthy stash of medals.

The team weren’t deterred by near gale force winds, rain, and cold conditions at Nga Puna Wai Sportsground and competed to the best of their ability, showcasing a wealth of talent in both track and field competitions over a range of age groups.

Outstanding results for Jay Davis winning gold in the U19 Hurdles, Ollie Young winning gold in the U19 Steeplechase and Enere McLaren-Taana soaring to gold in the U14 Long Jump. Max Millar won bronze in the U14 Shot Put and Ollie Harrison also won bronze in the U14 Hurdles.

These performances were especially impressive considering the array of talent present in each field. The South Islands are certainly a showcase for the best athletes in the South. Every member of the King's team left the track on Saturday having put a 100 percent into their event, representing themselves and King's admirably. With such strong results King's has much to look forward to come Nationals later in the year.

Congratulations to all King's Athletics team members, medalists and superb team manager – the unflappable Grant Koedyk - we are proud of you!
