The Power of Positive Habits
Setting a large goal can be intimidating, but small, daily habits can have a massive impact on our lives.
What is a habit? A habit is a task we perform at a certain time and place until it becomes automatic. We know it is a habit when we no longer have to think about it or plan it in advance; it’s just something we do.
In the book ‘Atomic Habits’, James Clear argues that creating habits is more effective in the long term than setting goals. These habits can be very small, such as reading two pages of a book in bed each night, flossing before brushing your teeth, setting an alarm, recording homework at the end of each class or doing a few minutes of stretches or exercises.
To start with, the smaller the habit the better! This makes it less intimidating and easier to incorporate it into your daily routines. Once the habit is established, it can be increased or added to. It can take several weeks or longer for the habit to fully take hold but after that is easy to keep up.
This approach can be applied to any facet of our lives, whether students, teachers or parents. Habits can help us to live healthier lives, pursue passions, achieve long-held goals, improve our mental health and perform better in our work and studies. Remember: start small!
