SGCNZ University of Otago Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festival

Andrew McKenzie —

The hot streak of three years in a row, winning the best 15 Minute Scene at the Otago Regionals continues...

On Thursday, the 31st Otago Regional SGCNZ University of Otago Sheilah Winn Festival was held in the King's High School Performing Arts Centre, where nine Dunedin secondary schools brought scenes to present and compete.

We were one of the lucky regions of New Zealand to actually hold a live event, rather than 'going digital,' although Covid complications meant the festival was not open to the public and extended friends/family like it normally is.

King's entered two pieces: 'Hamlet' for the 15 Minute Category and 'All's Well That Ends Well' for the 5 Minute Scene Category. There were very strong showings from the other schools, and the day was an awesome success.

Big ups to the backstage crew of Jonty, Declan, and Harvey for ensuring the day ran so smoothly, and to Mrs Vercoe, who managed and organised the festival.

Key awards from the day were:

  • Outstanding 15 Minute Scene: King's High School, 'Hamlet'
  • Outstanding 5 Minute Scene: Kavanagh College, 'Macbeth'
  • NSSP Direct Entry: Sophie Chettleburgh from Logan Park High School.

That means our team of 10 actors begin a new cycle of fundraising, saving, and preparing for a 5-day trip to Wellington over Queen's Birthday weekend, to attend the National Shakespeare Festival.

Congratulations, boys!
