National Cross Country Timaru

Grant Koedyk —

On Friday the athletes travelled to Timaru to arrive in time to go around the course at Ashbury Park. We then travelled on to Temuka where we stayed at the Temuka Holiday Park.

On Saturday we competed in the Cross Country events. The athletes did themselves proud with the best result being 13th in the Under 15 three man team's event, against some huge running schools like Westlake Boys' and Wanganui Collegiate. The course was mainly flat with three small hills put in and some steeple jumps to navigate; the immense competition drew the best out of everyone.

In the Individual Under 19 6 km race, there were 220 runners. The results were: George Bates 70th in a time of 22:26, Ezekiel Stewart 105th in a time of 23:17, Spencer Gable 123rd in a time of 23:42, Hugh Askerud 172nd in a time of 25:26, Zeke Buschl 177th in a time of 25:51 and Flynn Haig 181st in a time of 26:08.

In the Under 15 race of 4 km, there were 156 runners in the field. The results were Harry Mason 82nd in a time of 16:14, Brayden Scott 98th in a time of 16:53 and Harry McAslan 108th in a time of 17:19.

In the afternoon we went to Timaru High School to see Jack Lovelock’s Cross Country and Athletics Medals as well as his oak tree. This was presented to him at the Berlin Olympic Games in 1936. In the archives we were also very pleased to see Arnold Anderson's (Ex KHS Deputy Rector) Athletics Medals. He is Geoff Anderson’s father. Geoff has spent many hours helping out the KHS Athletics and Cross Country teams, so it was a pleasure to see these medals and to see the boys reaction to them.

Johan Lokman was 103rd in the Junior race in a time of 13 min for 3km. There were 130 in that field.

On Sunday George, Ezekiel, Spencer, Hugh and Zeke all ran for the Otago 2km Relay Team and Harry, Brayden and Harry ran for the Junior Otago team.

All of the athletes competed extremely well and represented King’s to a high standard in this challenging competition.
