Record broken at Athletics Championships

Grant Koedyk —

Once again our students have represented the school with pride at the NZSS Athletics Championships in Hastings last weekend.

Friday and Saturday the team went through the qualifying rounds successfully with only two concerns. Gregor Clarkson with a slight hamstring pull, which unfortunately hampered him the rest of the weekend and Keanu Vanisi with a nasty cut to the bottom of his left foot. This meant that we were concerned for our Junior Relay Team.

The next day, Keanu decided that he wanted to run in the final this meant he had to run the 100m,  400m and compete in the High Jump as he couldn’t scratch from a single event at this stage of the competition. He said that he couldn’t run on his foot but he could sprint, so he did and the rest is history. The fastest Junior Boys' 4 x 400m Relay Team ever in New Zealand. They are the national record holders now.

Flynn Murdoch had an impressive weekend with a total of ten 100m and 200m Sprints. He finished with four medals on Sunday afternoon two Gold and two Bronze.

The team would like to wish Duncan Trevithick all the best as he represents New Zealand in Adelaide in the 100m, 200m, 400m and the relay this week.

There have been some amazing results. One in particular is our Junior 4 x 100m Relay Team who not only won the race but set a NEW national record. Well done Keanu Vanisi, Flynn Murdoch, Bradley McPate and Duncan Trevithick!
