Positive Education: Humans are Awesome!

Marcella Hoedemaker —

Pretty straight forward isn't it?

If you type the word humans into a search bar, you will find many explanations and I choose this one for now.

Humans have a longer period of development after birth. Their life depends less on instinct than other animals, and more on learning.

"Humans are also born with less developed brains compared to other animals. This makes for an unusually long childhood, and which makes family life important”.

Pretty straightforward, right? Well, no. It is in times of hardship, restrictions, grief, pain, and uncertainty that we tend to reflect on learning, development, and family life.

How will one deal with these challenges while having a brain under construction? Not always in the best self-regulated manner or from a holistic perspective, but with other human dynamics that are trying to draw the individual’s attention. Such as a sense of belonging, hope, humour, creativity, kindness, and forgiveness to name a few.

Humans need each other, their community, and can thrive when things go well. Life can feel easier when things happen easily if a person does not have to put too much energy and effort into something to reach a goal. Leaving the person with time and energy left to develop other strengths, strengthen weaknesses, or help a fellow person find their feet again.

This takes communication, and I mean the type of communication in which we make mistakes, stutter, can’t find the right word, speak with an accent, or mispronounce a word. Sometimes there are no words to describe something. Indeed, total communication, verbal, body language and eye contact.

Humans, every generation has had its own ups and downs in their childhood and school years. It is not about comparing but listening, accepting, learning about the influences and effects it has and the willingness of all humans to make it work so all humans can carry on with their development and family life. Brain development is an important part of life, we need to look after ourselves and others. The brain has some plasticity, and one is never too old to learn.

Therefore, ask around, is everyone ok, can something be done and if yes what can be done.

Remember, education is an investment in oneself!
