King's Junior Golfer, Kairangi Koni off to a great start in 2023

Jo Barnsdale —

Junior Golfer Kairangi Koni achieved some great results over the past few weeks at a couple of NZ Open Qualifying Events. The first was a 12th Place finish at the Southland 54 Hole Strokeplay Event in Invercargill (14–15 January) with rounds of 84, 82 and 72. From this event, the top three finishes get invited to the NZ Open Qualifier in Cromwell.

The next stage one event was the Otago Strokeplay 54 Hole Event at the Otago Golf Course over the weekend (28–29 January). Kairangi shot rounds of 73, 78 and 71 to finish second in Division 2 (Men on handicaps 0-3) and an overall eighteenth of 70 in the Open Men field. From this event the top six gain entry to same NZ Qualifier in Cromwell.

This weekend, Kairangi will head to Christchurch to play in the Canterbury 54 Hole Event at Waimairi Golf Course. The 1 handicapper will be hoping to again finish strong, gain experience, and enjoy competing against some of the South Islands finest golfers in the hope of gaining entry to the NZ Open Qualifying Event. The NZ Open is held at Milbrook on 2–5th March, 2023.
