Positive Education: Appreciating Beauty

Gabriella Hyndman —

In these challenging and unprecedented times, the importance of our physical, mental, social and spiritual health is ever important.

Each aspect is related and contributes to our overall Hauora. With uncertainty currently impacting our lives, taking time to appreciate the beauty around us can re-energize us. This helps us to look after our hauora.

Our ability to feel powerful emotions when noticing the beauty in this world can help give us the chance to catch our breath and appreciate our surroundings. There are many ways that we can do this.

Students and whānau can appreciate beauty and excellence by:

  • Enjoying and/or creating art, music, writing or films
  • Creating a relaxing and appealing environment to work or study in
  • Enjoying time in nature, which could involve a short walk in one of the many beautiful corners of Dunedin. This can be done with friends, increasing our social connection with others.

Some places around Ōtepoti/Dunedin that we can visit and explore our beautiful natural surroundings and get our heart rate up include:

  • - St Clair Beach
  • - Second Beach
  • - Jacobs Ladder
  • - Karetai Track
  • - Tunnel Beach
  • - Ross Creek Reservoir
  • - Pineapple Track
  • - Doctors Point/Mapoutahi/Pūrākaunui
