Pasifika Art and Wrestling knowledge shared in I-Serve Programme

Jope Tudreu —

On Wednesday 10th May we were lucky to have Ana Teofilo of Samoan heritage, a former student of Queen's High School, who was able to showcase her knowledge of contemporary Pasifika Art.

We were quite humbled to be given an opportunity to work alongside a well renowned Dunedin artist whose art pieces have been showcased and sold around the world. Being able to share the experience of working alongside her in the morning session was definitely an awesome experience for the boys. It was also our Mother’s Day special and it was great to have our Mothers and family come along to share the experience in creating these art pieces.

On Wednesday 24th May we were happy to have Ilai Manu a well renowned Pasifika Wrestling expert join us.

Ilai has been an advocate for the art of wrestling and has even written a book on the subject called 'Fagatua Tokelau' where he tried to document the oral tradition on the subject.

The boys were also shown some basic moves in the martial art and this activity was thoroughly enjoyed by the boys.

The experience was both important and meaningful for the boys to understand that some of our traditional knowledge needs to be remembered in activities and in a formal format shown by Ilai.
