Otago Athletics Report

With 70 Athletes competing it was a very busy day for King’s athletes.

The field events of hammer, javelin , discus and shot put were proving to be successful for Steve Salelea, who placed 2nd in all his events, Joel Bolton, who placed 2nd in the Hammer and 3rd equal in the Shot Put and Tainui Little who placed 1st in the Hammer.  Also Isaiah Hoera won the High Jump at Under 14 level and Taylor Smith won the Javelin. 

Ryan Kreft proved to be very quick in the 100m and 200m winning both of these events in the Under 14 age group. Duncan Trevithick was very dominant winning the 100m, 200m, and 400m at the Under 15 level. 

Our Under 16 Athletes did well with Flynn Murdoch winning the 100m in record equalling time (11.28) and breaking the 200m record in his heat and then again in the final in a time of 22.69. Bradley McPate carried on his form from Nationals with a 3rd in the 200m and 2nd in the 200m. Keanu Vanisi placed 2nd in the High Jump and 3rd in the 100m. George Bates did well with a 1st in the 1500m and a 2nd in the 800m, followed closely in both events by William Scharpf. 

In the Under 19 we had Liam Condliffe competing very well with a 1st in the 110m Hurdles, 2nd in the Long Jump and 3rd in the 400m. Janadhi Dissanayake continued his good form in the High Jump and placed 2nd. Drew Cairney placed 2nd in the 3000m and the 1500m. Alex Brown also continues his winning form from Nationals with a record in the Open 3000m walk in a time of 14:50.56. 

In the relays we placed 1st in the Under 14 (Ryan Kreft, Josh Pollock, Brayden Everiss and Seth McLeod); 1st in the Under 15’s (Oli Phillips, Jay Davis, Isaac Dolan, and Duncan Trevithick), 1st in the Under 16’s  (Keanu Vanisi, Flynn Murdoch, Bradley McPate and Ryan Watterston) and the Under 19’s came 4th (Janadhi Dissanayake, Gio Leituala, Drew Cairney and Liam Condliffe). 

This year as there were no Otago-Southland competitions we had the Under 16 and Under 19, 4 by 400 relays as well. In the Under 16 relay we placed 2nd (Keanu Vanisi, Flynn Murdoch, Bradley McPate and Duncan Trevithick) and 3rd (Nik Dohig, George Bates, William Scharpf and Ryan Watterston). 

In the Under 19 relay Gio Leituala, Drew Cairney, Liam Condliffe and Janadhi Dissayanake were 1st and our other team of Jordan Frost, Matthew Wong, Samuel Boyes and Josh Toomin came in 2nd. 

Well done to all athletes who competed as it was a long and busy day for you. Congratulations to the athletes who qualified for the South Islands being held in Timaru on the 23rd to 25th March.
