Secondary Schools' Tournament Week: Water Polo

Vicki Jopson —

The South Island Secondary Schools' Water Polo Tournament was held in Dunedin on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. King’s entered two teams into the competition.

The King’s B Team are a young team made up of mostly Yr. 9, 10 and 11 players. They took some heavy losses throughout the three days, however, showed some fantastic improvement. They had their best game against Christchurch Boys', where they scored 6 goals against a very strong team.
The King’s A Team won games against Shirley Boys' (12 - 7), Christchurch Boys' (9-8) and John McGlashan College (7-5). This put them top of their pool which meant they moved into a semi-final with OBHS. This was a closely fought match but in the fourth quarter OBHS were able to pull away and King’s A lost 7-4.

On Monday, King’s A played John McGlashan in a play- off for 3rd and 4th. King’s won 7-4 and finished 3rd overall receiving the Bronze Medal. Congratulations must go to Nathan Martin who was named in a very strong Tournament Team.

Overall, it bodes well for the future, with nine Juniors playing between the two teams. A huge thank you goes out to all the parents who suppored the boys but most of all to Eric Munro and Will Pickering for coaching.
