Football 1st XI qualify for Nationals

Julie Collings —

The Football 1st XI have sealed the deal and qualified for NZSS Lotto Premier Tournament with a win over Otago Boys' High School (OBHS). On Wednesday, the team took on OBHS at the Logan Park Turf in a game that served three purposes: Interschool, OSSSA Competition and a NZSS Qualifier Match.

After a tense start and goal from OBHS, the boys settled and outworked the opposition to win the game 2-1. Max Davidson sent the keeper the wrong way on a penalty mid-way through the second half and sub Oli Phillips buried the second goal just 2 mins into his stint on the park. Patrick Ward and Angus Dagg were outstanding in the backs but the team effort was what gave the team the edge to take the win.

The team played Timaru Boys' High School (TBHS) early last week in Timaru winning 3-2. These two wins put them through to the national tournament as top qualifiers of our region. The NZSS Premier Tournament that takes place in Napier at the end of August/early September, is the pinnacle of school Football competition with the top 32 teams competing for the crown as best Secondary school team in the country. All the best lads!
