The Otago Water Polo Club U14 boys’ team had an amazing campaign and came away with Gold
This competition in December was particularly memorable for King’s High School. The team was coached by Old Boys, Josh McGregor and Cam Innes, and nine of the team consisted of King’s students; Rory Harrold, Kais Shaheer, Conan Tabb, Jackson Phillips, Mac Menzies, Gregor Watts, Logan McFarlane, Ned Starkey and Nathan Maree. Rory Harrold was awarded MVP of the tournament. The King’s 2024 Head Boy, Ted Menzies also had his first nationals as a Referee.
The tournament consisted of 22 teams, which was heavily represented by several Auckland based clubs. The team went through pool play unbeaten, and also scoring the most goals for the entire tournament. The boys then went on to win a close semi-final against Sea Wolf (Auckland) 6-3 and finally winning against North Harbour 5-3 to take gold.
The team played with great spirit, never giving up and working together as a team gave them the winning edge.
Conan Tabb and Rory Harrold have been invited to trial for the NZ U16 team. The first trial is to be held in Auckland in February. If the boys are successful in selection, they will head to Australia to play a tri series later this year and then to play in the U16 World Cup in 2026 to be held in Europe.
