Positive Education

Sarah PaineAugust 4, 2024

Gratitude is feeling thankful for the good things in your life rather than focusing on the negatives.  It is a powerful practice that can positively impact both teachers and students. When we take the time to acknowledge and appreciate the good things in our lives, it not only enhances our overall well-being but also creates a positive learning environment.

Many studies have linked gratitude to increased happiness, stronger relationships, and improved physical health. In recent years, studies on gratitude among youth suggest that it fosters more positive emotions and better attitudes toward school. When students adopt a grateful mindset, they become more engaged and motivated. They begin to develop some appreciation for the learning process. They are also more likely to continue working when things get tough.

Simple ways we can all practice gratitude this week:

  • Regularly saying "thank you" or offer compliments to classmates and teachers for their help or contributions

  • Showing gratitude by giving full attention when others are speaking, showing respect and appreciation for their thoughts and feelings

  • Sharing good news or positive experiences with others to spread joy and appreciation

  • Smiling and greeting others warmly to create a positive atmosphere

  • Taking a moment to appreciate small, everyday things, such as a nice day, a good meal, or a friendly conversation.
