Senior School News and Notices

KingsWay School —

Please read the following notices for the Senior School:

Dear Parents,

I hope that this newsletter finds you well and that you have enjoyed the unseasonably warm and dry weather over March. April is proving to be colder and wetter already! As teachers, we appreciated the opportunity to meet with many of you on Tuesday this week to discuss your sons and daughters progress. At Kingsway, our partnership with parents is important and we encourage you to remain connected with us as we all learn together as a community.

Here is a riddle: who can expend 12 hours’ worth of time into a 10 hour slot?
Answer: a teenager who is multi-tasking on various technological platforms at once (Microsoft teams, facebook, texting, Instagram).
This was one of the many interesting facts that I gleaned at a parent information evening run by the Parenting Place earlier in the year. As a community, we all know that it is a constant challenge to understand, monitor and respond appropriately to students’ technology use. As a school, we understand this, which is why next term on Tuesday, 7 May we will be inviting you in for a presentation on these important issues (full details to come soon).

Below we have highlighted a number of key events and developments over the last week, as well as some important dates and practical elements that would be useful to be aware of.

Senior School Geography

This term all Geography classes have been out in the field collecting research data. The Year 13s went on a camp to Rotorua to investigate the impact of tourism in this area and we enjoyed a highly informative and entertaining time at various tourist attractions as well as spending large amounts of time interviewing tourists to collect data.

The Y12s were in Auckland city and the Sky Tower last week to investigate urban patterns- looking at land use and pedestrian flow.

The Year 11s embarked on an informative trip to investigate the gold mining issues in Waihi.

Thanks to all the teachers involved for making education outside the classroom happen so that the students can have hands-on, real life experiences. What an awesome way to earn credits!

Vanuatu Boot Camp

The team is beginning to gel together and develop friendships which will help ensure the success of the mission later this year. Please take the time to uphold the team in your prayers.

Senior School Ball 2019

Last week, the Senior School ball was held at the Spencer on Byron, Takapuna. It was tremendous to see a great turnout for this event and students getting fully involved the nights' festivities! A big thanks to Mrs Perrow and all the students on the Ball Committee who helped put this extremely successful event together.

Applied Science Marine Course

Level 2 Applied Marine Science students were blessed with glorious weather at Orewa beach, as they took part in their initial scuba diver training program.

Students gain their Open water PADI certification as part of this course, which contributes 11 credits.

The course includes Achievement standards on Marine Ecology and Microscopy.

Student Recognition Assembly

On Monday this week, the majority of our assembly was devoted to recognising and honouring some of the various achievements students have already attained throughout 2019. The following students have made brilliant contributions in the following spheres.

  • Sarah Thomson (Robotics)
  • Jonathan Squirrel (Coding)
  • Nancy Xu (Science)
  • James Donovan (Swimming)
  • Joshua Harold (Athletics/running)
  • Taryn Banks (Surf lifesaving)
  • Stephanie Maritz (Awarded Joceyln Gilling Scholarship for Commerce)

At this assembly, we did point out that there would also be many other achievements that we do not know about. As such, we would like to hear from you when other students’ achieve various milestones throughout the year.
