Sports Council 2018

KingsWay School —

What the Sports Council have already achieved and are planning for the rest of 2018.

The Sports Council has started 2018 with a ‘hiss and a roar’. Within days of being elected to the Council the students were involved with setting up and assisting with the Senior Athletics Day. The following week saw the Sports Council organising games for the Family Fun Night with feedback from many people saying the games were the most enjoyable and well organised so far.

At the beginning of each year the Sports Council decides on its focus for promoting sport at KingsWay School. One of the opportunities the Council was involved with was the Year 3 & 4 sports exchange between KingsWay School and Silverdale School. This initiative was not only to promote sport but also community and values of both schools. Each Year 3 & 4 student was given a choice of a sport to play; normally football, basketball, hockey and netball.

During their lunch break, forty Year 10 KingsWay School students volunteered to attend a workshop on how to coach and how to lead groups. In their area of expertise, the Year 13 Sports Council were given the responsibility of supervising and assisting Year 10 students, should they need it.

The Sports Council organised a lunchtime touch rugby competition once a week over 3 weeks  for Year 5 & 6 classes. This was a great success and everyone enjoyed this competition.

The annual Sports Council sports night took place early in Term 2. Two teams, comprising of male and female Year 10 to 13 students, together with two alumni or teachers to boost their team, enjoyed this event. Congratulations to Renee Vautier, whose team took out the competition with a 100% winning streak.

Recently our female Sports Council members organised the Auckland Christian Schools’ Netball Zone Day which included 11 schools and 37 teams. This event was organised to a very high standard and they are to be congratulated for their accuracy and efficiency. The girls recorded results, sorted final draws, wrote up game cards and presented certificates as well as treating the normal sporting mishaps; they did an amazing job.

This week we have Takoha Ropati from He Oranga Poutama – Active, coming to school to teach the Sports Council how to play Ki o Rahi. The council has been fortunate to secure funding through the Auckland Council Hibiscus and Bays Local Board for a Maori engagement grant to purchase Ki o Rahi equipment. The Sports Council will learn how to play this Maori sport and then teach it to our students.

Currently the Sports Council is putting together footage for a 30 second video for the Harbour Sport School competition on June 8. Schools create a sport related video and it is placed on the Harbour School Sport Facebook page. The school with the most likes win a $300 Sports Distributors voucher. Please look out for more information in the e-newsletter and ‘like’ our video to give us a greater chance of winning.

The rest of the term looks just as busy with planned lunchtime dodgeball games, Year 13 students' vs teachers' volleyball match, attending North Harbour sports student council meetings at Harbour House and writing articles for this connect magazine.
