Message from Paul Miller - Head of Junior Secondary
Dear Parents, Caregivers and Whānau,
One of the aims of Junior Secondary is for the students to grow in their self-efficacy and agency. An area of the school that focuses on this is Academic Tutoring. There are two time slots each week for the students to plan their week, continue their class work and request time with their core teachers to consolidate their knowledge or extend themselves. Often teachers will schedule workshops with specific students, but we ask that the students work on identifying when they need support and seek it out themselves. They can email their teachers and request workshops. As we approach the end of the term, there is a natural tendency for there to be assessments. Please encourage your tamariki to utilise Academic Tutoring as a resource for managing these times effectively. We are confident that the skills they develop in these times will serve them well in the future.
Shave for a Cure
One of our students, Boston Dean, has been growing his hair for five years so that he could donate the hair to make wigs for those suffering from cancer. He has set up a donation page. The proceeds will go to the Leukaemia and Blood Cancer Foundation. Please consider supporting Boston! https://www.shaveforacure.co.nz/bostondean

Wider Learning Payments
Wider Learning course costs were due before commencement of the course, however, there are still a number of payments outstanding. Please can these be paid soonest as the school incurs costs in running these courses. Course costs can be found in the attachment at the bottom of this newsletter. These can be paid into the Senior School bank account: 12-3084-0192348-55. Please reference your payment with Student's name, ID number & 'Wider Learning'
Where payments have not been received, students may be allocated to a course with no cost.

Benefits of extracurricular involvement
Numerous studies have shown the link in participation in extracurricular activities and the associated increase in the physical, emotional, and social well-being of students.
Some of these benefits include:
- A sense of belonging
- Higher self-esteem
- Cultivating personal identity
- An opportunity to develop competencies and skills in particular areas
- Healthy ways to cope with/alleviate effects of stress
- Improved academic performance
KingsWay has many extracurricular opportunities. It has been wonderful to see the interest in SVA from the Junior Secondary students, with close to 30 registering and receiving their badges this term for their involvement in community service. It is also fantastic to see students getting involved with sport at social and competitive levels. Please encourage your child to find an area that they can participate in.
