Congratulations to our Volleyball teams
Our Y9 & 10 Volleyball teams have completed there season this week and have done exceptionally well. Volleyball is a fast growing sport at KingsWay and you cant walk through the gym at break times without the risk of being spiked by a volleyball!😀
Last night after two exciting final games in the North Harbour Schools competition the Girls Blue team, won both games, taking out 1st place in Pool 2 and the Girls Yellow team came 3rd place in Pool 3. It is very exciting to see how these girls will go in future competitions.
Both boys team were entered into the Super League competition which is for schools top teams. Players must have a high skill level and have been playing for a while. Both our teams did exceptionally well her with our Year 10s coming 6th and our Year 9s coming 10th out of a 20 team league.
Congratulations to: David Howie
Kingsway Mountain biking – Adventure in the South
2022 was a breakthrough season for KWS in the Auckland Schools XC Mountain Biking competition, and the excitement of the season finale at Riverhead already had us eagerly looking ahead to the 2023 series. But the XC season wasn’t over.
There is no doubt that centre of gravity in New Zealand mountain biking is southwards. And it was in the deep, deep south that the Schools Nationals were held in Bluff, where the only thing between you and the frozen continent is beautiful Stewart Island and 5000km of ocean. The heavy-weights of the national scene were there in force, and even at this level it’s a world of professional coaches and sponsored development teams.
KWS hasn’t been represented at the Nationals before, but this year David Howie packed his bags and his bike and headed south as an unheralded and unseeded rider, proudly flying the KWS flag. Lots to learn, the weirdness and tiredness of competing out of a suitcase and far from home and comfort zone. But that’s the arena.
David carried himself with focus, determination, and sportsmanship. Bunched in the pack behind the nationally seeded racers David fought his way up the Under-17 field of about 40 riders to finish an admirable 6th in a very gritty effort. And he brought back a whole bunch of lessons from this southern adventure.
But 2022’s adventures weren’t yet over – the last stop of the season was the Whaka 100 in Rotorua, a high-profile national all-age competition. David competed in the Eliminator event run in downtown Rotorua - crowds, live-streaming, and a host of internationally (UCI) ranked competitors. Even Anton Cooper was there, New Zealand’s highest ranked international XC racer, a national hero in mountain biking. All competitors had to do an individual time-trial lap and only the top 32 got to progress to the small group racing stages. To his surprise and delight David qualified. And spotting Anton Cooper he took his chance to meet him, a real highlight. That would have been enough, but as the names for the next round of racing went up, to his utter astonishment he saw that he was racing Anton himself – unbelievable! To line up at the start with this titan, to race him shoulder to shoulder, was beyond anything he’d imagined. (Spoiler alert – Anton won; in fact he went on to win the whole event.)
Come and join David and the rest of the KWS mountain biking team as they look to make next season the school’s best ever.
Roll on 2023!!

Summer Sports
I had the privilege of going to watch some of the Summer Touch teams playing at Victor Eaves Park this week. Its been seven years since I last stood on the side line watching my own children play. It brought back a flood of precious memories. At the time I was probably thinking about what else I had to do that night or what I was making for dinner. Little did I know that I was actually making wonderful memories with my children, who are now grown up and have lives of their own.
Parents, enjoy the time watching your children from the side line, one day you will miss it!

Spotlighting our Student Coaches
Without our Coach and Manager volunteers we wouldn't be able to play sport at school level. We want to acknowledge all our Coaches/Managers and say THANK YOU for all you do.
This week we are spotlighting Caleb Cristobel who helps coach his brothers Year 2 Basketball team. We love the fact that at such a young age you are committing to giving up one lunchtime a week to grow others in the sport you love. Well done Caleb.
Using Sport as a Vehicle to Teach Life Lessons
Facing tough situations.
Talented rugby player and East Otago High school student, Abigail Paton, joined the Otago Girls High School team, due to her own school not fielding a team in the competition. She trained and played with the Otago Girls’ team all season and together they made it to the Otago finals. Unfortunately, due to competition rules…if the Otago Girls’ team played Paton in the final, they would cede a very likely chance of going to the Top Four National Tournament…

Reminder, only the Senior School 1st teams may play top team on game day. ALL other teams, it is expected that all players get fair and equal time on the playing field throughout the season.
