Exploring Occupations

This term, in Year 1 and 2, our amazing tamariki have been exploring occupations. Just as God gave Adam work to do in the Garden of Eden, we, too, have specific responsibilities and work to do. For now, school and our learning are our work. We invited our parent community to come and share with us their job and what that entails.

First, Dr Jacobson shared his role as an anaesthetist at North Shore Hospital. He assured the children he does not use “fairy dust” to put his patients to sleep! The children were fascinated by the equipment he used. Next up was Mr Barnard, a quantity surveyor. We loved learning about how Mathematics plays such a vital part in his work. This led to the tamariki estimating how many Lego pieces it would take to measure the height of their drink bottle. We then welcomed Simeon, a plumber who successfully demonstrated how to connect a basin to the sewage. This was so insightful as our students gained an insight into the work that goes on behind the scenes and impacts our daily lives. To conclude our topic, Mr Rademeyer came to discuss his role as a service manager for a road construction company. Ensuring all the heavy machinery is in a road-worthy condition is vital as new roads are built.

The common thread shared by each of our guests was the importance of reading and maths, and that you never stop learning!

God has a plan and purpose for us, and we look forward to seeing the fruit of these rich learning experiences.
