KingsWay School —

A Note from Jordan Barley

Learning at school and at home is influenced by a number of contributors. A child’s everyday nutrition and a healthy lunchbox is one of these and is paramount for our child’s happy, daily routine. Our KingsWay learners are blessed by parents who care - care about the everyday detail – about our children’s learning, their physical, mental and their emotional health and wellbeing. Another way parents show an ethic of care, is by providing healthy lunches for their children each day.

Finding the balance of wholesome foods that fill the tummy and provide sustained energy to learn, concentrate and be able to relate well to others is vital. The convenience of quick and easy snacks, while making putting the lunch box together quick and easy, sometimes leaves a child without what they require to fuel their busy minds and bodies and sustain them throughout their regular school day and afternoons. As parents, we will often see the result of poor food choices or water intake at home in the afternoon, with children who are tired, hungry and more often in a poor mood.

Of course, I’ll be the first to put my hand up and say that in our family, some days preparing lunchboxes for our three children are trickier than others and is not the most anticipated part of our day. It does take time, some thought and effort. However, if you get the mix right – with food choices that will be eaten, are interesting and that provide sustaining energy – then it can certainly help towards a brighter school day.

As parents we play an important role in modelling good food choices, in the way that we eat and in the way we pack our child’s lunches. This speaks volumes to what we value. This is especially true if you have a child who digs their toes in and really challenges food choices in their lunchbox. When packing your child’s lunchbox, keep in mind that children prefer food that is quick and easy to eat, and which is not messy.

Studies show that habits formed in childhood determine how they will nourish their bodies as adults. Well nourished children will have lower risks of developing diabetes, heart disease and other lifestyle related diseases. Great health is one of the best gifts we can give them as parents, it is a very worthwhile time investment.

With this in mind and wanting to ensure our children are eating well, are in the best place to maximise their learning, and be the best they can be, here are some great resources for ideas on making up healthy lunches for our tamariki.

We look forward to seeing many healthy lunches in Term 3!

Kia Kaha and enjoy the holidays,

Jordan Barley

Expressions of interrest:

It has been a strange year for Sport so far this year. Unfortunately, all interschool sports days for Term 1 and 2 have been cancelled, but we are hoping that events will go ahead next term.

If your child is interested in playing Rippa and/or Hockey for this school at the local Zone day, please register their interest by emailing Raelene.Beguely@kingsway.school.nz. Please note, this is not a registration, just an expression of interest.

Further information regarding registration will be available to those children invited to participate next term.

SCHOOL FUN RUN

Just a friendly heads up that in Week 4 in Term 3 (on August 12th), the annual Year 3-9 School Cross Country will be run. We will be combining this event with a fundraiser this year so keep an eye out early next term for more information. And kids can start training during the holidays too.

Each session starts with a formal lesson; all players will learn a new strategy, idea or skill each week. Then they put those skills into practice with activities and games. All games are monitored and supervised by the coach who provides individual feedback along the way.

Throughout the programme, we reward kids that do well and encourage and support kids that are struggling. At completion of the programme we recognise each child with a certificate based on their performance.
