Picking up students from trainings

If you pick up your son/daughter from the Senior Campus after 4.35pm, you must do so from the Jelas Road entrance. The Senior Campus Estuary gate (back gate) will be locked at 4.35 each day.

Brutal, brave, and brilliant

There are days when it occurs to you that there are easier sports than mountain biking. Sports less exposed to the wayward elements, sports that have well-defined and relatively low-risk boundaries, sports where you just get sweaty, sports where you get to ease yourself in and take the odd breather, sports within walking distance or a convenient drive of a nice hot shower.

Mountain biking is not one of those sports. It is exhilarating. But sometimes it is brutal. And when it is there is something of the spirit of ‘Outward Bound’ about it. It is the team - and it’s also you, with nowhere to hide. You have to dig deep. You go places and learn things that you won’t elsewhere. Lessons for life.

As much as round 1 at Riverhead was breath-taking, the word on most lips for the second round of the Auckland Schools mountain biking competition, held at Hunua, was indeed ‘brutal’. A course that had been relatively rideable a week before had crumbled, and what’s more it relentlessly deteriorated through the course of the day’s racing. The juniors first up had it really tough, and the seniors in subsequent races even tougher. With each successive race - indeed with each successive rider - the conditions became more and more hostile.

And those conditions, laughing in the face of all reason, were the chief enemy, not the other competitors. This was some arena.

And it was a heck of a time to debut for our 3 new team members, Mia Anderson (U20F), Connar Gloy (U13M), and Jonah Jacobs (U15M). Welcome to the team Mia, Connar and Jonah! You did yourselves, your team and your school proud.

The team consisted of Ethan Gloy, Dylan Steven, Josiah Beattie, Sienna Corbett, Sam Anderson, David Howie, and Tristan Corbett for a strong and pleasing team showing.

Kudos to the whole team on such a tough day, where lining up and racing was a major achievement, let alone completing. In podium news Sienna Corbett (U16F) traded bronze for silver as she toughed it out past her podium rival for the first time, and David Howie took out the U20M category in back-to-back wins.

The support team was back again in force, with the team marquee looking even better this round, adorned with a fine Kingsway School banner (thank you Trent and Lorelle Harrison!) together with groundsheet and sides (and did we ever need them!).

Round 2 is done - the arena of Round 3 at Woodhill awaits, where our brilliant team will once again strive valiantly, and spend themselves in a worthy cause. Would you like to join us! E-mail the sports department if interested.

Year 9/1 Netball Team

On Monday we were casually warming up before our netball game at North Harbour. Halfway through squats, Karla spots Grace Nweke. We rushed over and politely asked if we could take a photo.

As she came closer we were all surprised at how extremely tall she was. We huddled together, awkwardly smiled for the photos, and then said our goodbyes.

Grace plays for the Mystics and has played for the Silver Ferns a few times. She is an amazing shooter with a 95% accuracy. As a Goal Attack I inspire to be just like her and play for the Silver ferns one day.

Reminder for Supporters

KingsWay is subject to the College Sport bylaws that govern player, coach and spectator behaviour. As such we are responsible for providing a safe environment for College Sport Auckland matches and events in which all individuals are treated with respect and games are completed in the spirit of fair play.

Please remember that:

      * Schools are a smoke-free environment. Refrain from smoking or vaping while on school
        premises.
      * No alcohol on the school premises.
      * No Gum 
      * No dogs on the school premises (especially on the side of games.)

Astro Rules

       * NO FOOD or Gum on the astro
       * Trainers only
       * No sitting, leaning or standing or hanging off any 
of the equipment e.g. tennis nets,

         goals.
       * No bikes/skateboards/scooters etc

Real Life Lessons through Sport

ABOUT 20 YEARS AGO NEW ZEALAND SAMOAN, MICHAEL ALFRED STOWERS, WAS VOLUNTEERING AT AN IRONMAN’S EVENT IN AUCKLAND. As he watched lots of “skinny, fast fellas” powering past his post, he saw a couple of Pacific Islander competitors. For Stowers, to see someone of his own race and with a similar build competing in that event, enabled him to believe that he could too. That started him on his own Ironman journey. He has since completed 15 Ironman triathlons, each consisting of a 3.9 km swim, 180 km bike and 42 km run. He admits to not being one of the fastest competitors out there, but for him. “finishing is winning”. This year he will take part in the ultimate Ironman event at Kona, Hawaii, renowned for its tough conditions. Stowers is aware that it was through seeing a Pacific Islander competing in the Ironman all those years ago, that helped him to have the courage and belief to try it for himself. He knows that weight related health problems are a big issue for Islanders and he wants to model a different way. Now in his fifties, his motivation is to demonstrate that sport is not only for youngsters and that even the big island build can compete in long distance events. Stowers’ motivation for doing Ironman events has always been about more than himself. He knows that seeing someone we can relate to doing something we admire or respect can be a powerful motivator. He wants to be that inspiration to his community. It is important for us all to be aware that the way we live our lives can influence others. The bible encourages us to use that power of influence for good; to set an example that inspires others to make good decisions and to live a good life. If we have the courage to step up to that challenge and take on the mantel of a role model, we have the potential to make a significant difference in the lives of others.

Prayer: Lord thank You for the opportunity to be a positive influence on others. Please remind me that I have this potential in me and help me to courageously use that potential for good.

Sports uniforms

Please be aware that Sports Uniform may NOT be worn for anything other than games. Not for PE, around school, drama etc.
Please ask your children not wear it around school, this wears out the uniform too quickly and replacement costs will increase sports fees.
