An Update from Graeme Budler - moving to Alert Level 2

KingsWay School —

Dear KingsWay Community,

The Prime Minister announced today that Auckland moves to Alert Level 2 from midnight tonight.

KingsWay welcomes and anticipates all staff and students to return tomorrow under Alert Level 2. The staff and leadership are committed to maintaining the health and safety of the KingsWay community and promote specific COVID-19 procedures to minimise the risk of transmission while at Alert Level 2. These COVID-19 procedures are underpinned by KingsWay School's Five Principles which include the Ministry of Education three tenants of safe practices.

KingsWay School's Five Overarching Principles

  1. We are ensuring effective and safe hygiene practices.
This principle includes procedures to ensure safe hand washing and social distancing practices.
  2. Contact tracing.
This principle includes procedures to identify and trace people potentially infected if a case was identified in the KingsWay community.
  3. Minimise gatherings of large numbers of people in one place.
Assemblies and crowds of over 100 are discouraged. Face-to-face community gatherings are postponed or cancelled under Alert Level 2.
  4. Minimising and monitoring contact with others outside of the KingsWay school bubble.
This includes procedures to ensure that contact with people outside of the KingsWay daily student and staff roll is minimal. If unavoidable, strict physical distancing is to be maintained.
  5. Common Sense
Procedures can only go so far in protecting the community. Staff and parents must engage in common-sense decision making, while always attempting to maintain the integrity of the overarching principles. Anyone who is sick is required to stay at home.

Specific Level 2 COVID-19 Procedures

1. Maintaining Physical Distancing

  • No sharing of food or drinks is permitted. Drink bottles are encouraged, to avoid students drinking from water fountains.
  • No more than 100 people in one indoor area at once is permitted.
  • In the event of an emergency evacuation, staff must attempt to maintain physical distancing requirements while balancing the need for urgency. However, the emergency takes precedence.
  • Physical distancing is an effective precaution to prevent the spread of disease.
  • Students and staff must maintain a reasonable physical distance that ensures they are not breathing on or touching each other.
  • This must be coupled with acceptable hygiene practices (coughing into your elbow, handwashing and drying) and regular cleaning of commonly touched surfaces.

2. Lunch and Morning Tea Arrangements

a. Tuckshop

The tuckshop resumes service on 18 February. Orders can be made online. Sorry but no cash transactions until Alert Level 1. Queues must maintain physical distancing requirements.

b. Uniform Shop

The uniform shop will be open on Thursday 18 February from 08:30am – 11:30am. Senior Campus students can collect online orders directly from the uniform shop and any items not collected will be given to their homeroom teachers. Junior Campus online orders will be delivered to the Junior Campus before lunchtime. Unfortunately, there will be no cash transactions until Alert Level 1. When visiting the uniform shop, please: sign in using both the COVID tracer app and the COVID-19 Check-in on the KingsWay School app, maintain social distancing and restrict movement to the areas outside the uniform shop in the 'old Primary'.

3. Maintaining Effective and Safe Hygiene Procedures

  • Hand sanitiser and disposable towels are available in all areas of the school. The expectation is that staff lead by example by sanitising at the start and end of every lesson or activity. Teachers of Year 1-4 students will supervise the cleaning surfaces and sanitising their hands before and after meals.
  • Only one student is allowed into the Health Centre at a time. Students must wait outside for appointments with the nurse.
  • Staff and students may use any of the designated school toilet facilities on site. These are thoroughly cleaned at the end of each day.
  • The wearing of masks is allowed but not a requirement.

4. Meetings

  • The maximum size of face-to-face meetings should not exceed 100 in one space.
  • Adults appear to be most at risk of severe health complications related to the virus. Parents should communicate through phone or email and avoid coming onto the site unless to pick up a child from the sickbay.
  • Parents should avoid coming onto KingsWay sites, except in the case of an emergency. At the Junior Campus, students should be supervised by an adult until it is safe to allow them to enter the building unaccompanied. All adults must maintain social distancing guidelines at all times. Parents of Year 0-2 students can accompany their child onto the Junior Campus once they have signed in using the App.

5. Contact Tracing

  • In the event of a confirmed transmission within the KingsWay community, it is essential to be able to track the extent of transmission.
  • Staff are required to maintain a log of their interactions with outside agencies and contractors to assist with contact tracing.
  • Staff and students are requested to leave school by 5 pm daily to allow for the site to be cleaned and secured.
  • All visitors are required to sign in at reception.

6. People Unable to Attend School During Alert Level 2

Students

The teachers’ first responsibility is to teach the students in front of them. Mandatory online catchups and learning packs cease at Alert Level 2. Students who cannot attend school are encouraged to liaise daily with another student to keep them up to speed with classroom expectations. Teachers will not be providing dedicated online learning opportunities for students who remain at home.

7. Reported Cases of COVID-19 in the KingsWay Community

In the event of a reported case of a parent or student, KingsWay's leadership will liaise with the Ministry of Education and Health and enforce a mandatory 72-hour shutdown of the school. The Executive Principal will contact parents via the KingsWay School app and other communication tools.

8. Sport Practices

  • All afterschool sport's practices can resume under Alert Level 2.
  • PE programmes resume under Alert Level 2.
  • College Sport to advise at a later date whether competitions resume under Alert Level 2. Please check the status of competitions on the sport’s page of the KingsWay website.

9. SKIDs Afterschool Programme

SKISs resumes under Alert Level 2 and bookings can be made as usual.

10. Trips and Whole School Events

  • Whole school gatherings are postponed until Alert Level 1.
  • Trips are approved on a case by case basis by the Executive Leadership Team. Please check the website on the morning of the excursion to confirm the status of the trip.

11. Contractor Procedures

  • All contractors need to sign in and sign out daily at reception before undertaking any work on site. There they will be briefed by a receptionist regarding the school's Alert Level 2 procedures.
  • All contractors are required to maintain social distancing procedures while on-site and record areas accessed for tracking purposes.

The Senior Leadership is committed to protecting the health and safety of the KingsWay community by streamlining procedures as we move in and out of Alert Levels. Please contact me if you have any queries or suggestions.

Kind regards,

Graeme Budler
Executive Principal
