Senior School News - 18 June, 2020

KingsWay School —

Dear Parents,

Thank you for your ongoing support and for partnering with us in your child’s education. Some people may ask; what is parent partnership and why does it matter? There is a wealth of research that has identified multiple ways in which parents’ engagement with students education positively affects their educational outcomes. Some resources specific to the New Zealand context can be found below.

Senior Outdoor Education

After weeks of lock down and lack of outdoors activities, excitement is building for L2OED and L3ABL courses as they prepare for next week’s Navigation and Safety Camp. Students and staff will head to the Kauaeranga Valley to explore for a couple of nights together. It is exciting to be able to recommence these adventures!

Parent-Teacher Conferences

Parent conferences are coming up in Week 2 of Term 3 (Tuesday 28 July).

Some important details follow:

  • As announced previously, these will still be conducted remotely/online (details to follow shortly about the logistics of this).
  • All Senior School students (Year 10-13) have the opportunity for subject interviews, which are 5 minutes each.
  • Year 11 and 12 students will have the opportunity to book a Pathways Interview. This interview will run for 15minutes with designated staff members trained to give feedback about options for 2021 in line with career aspirations.
We have limited spaces available, so please only book this if your child is uncertain about their options for next year. It is also important to know this is just a check-in, not an in-depth careers session.
  • Year 13 students wanting Pathways related advice should continue to book meetings with Mrs Perrow through the Careers Centre -

Course Catchups

Next week we start to offer extended times in some subjects for students to work on projects or other practical tasks that were missed during the lockdown. Teachers will be in communication with students to inform them of specific times when they can work on subjects such as DGT, HMT, ART and MUS to name a few. It is important to emphasise that even though students have been given this extended subject time, one drawback is they will miss time in other subjects. Therefore, we are encouraging all students to continue to work hard to manage their time and workloads effectively.

English Speeches

Year 11 English students have been spending the last week delivering outstanding solo talks. Topics have been controversial, thought-provoking and engaging. Teachers have been very pleased with the overall quality of the oral presentations.
