Come and support our 1st XI boys tonight at Red Beach Park 6pm

In the words of one of their Captains, JD Birdwell, last week the team started with a scrappy loss down south.

Last week, the first round of the senior A3 season found KingsWay away at Ormiston Senior College early on Saturday morning. The game got underway, debuts being handed to Matthew "Matt 2.0" Springer, Oliver Travers, Cole Soper, Brendon Taruvinga, and Caelan Seet; as well as Tyla Schneider, Thomas Smale, and James Gray off the bench. The poor quality of the pitch and perhaps the effects of the long travel provided an extremely jammy first half, with no lack of clearances, long balls, and headers, summed up at halftime by assistant coach Scott Werthmann saying, "Welcome to school football boys." However, highlights of the half were a lovely finish by year 11, Duane "the tank" Baron, which was unfortunately called offside, and a few moments of good football, just lacking a clinical finish. Eventually, failure to clear a corner allowed Ormiston to take a 1-0 lead, which was maintained until halftime.

The second half saw Kingsway come storming out the gates, with chances being created seemingly every possession. The 'boyos' found their rhythm and, in true 'Gaf Yaya' fashioned football, maintained possession, playing around the back until opportunities to go forward presented themselves. Near misses from Duane Baron and Brendon "Lil Jon Jon" Taruvinga meant the score stayed 1-0, and the lads stayed hungry for more. The last 20 minutes was marked by near total possession from the away side, complete with chance after chance left unconverted. Yellow cards were handed out left and right to the Ormiston players, including a red which was recalled after further review by the referee. Much to the Captains, JD Birdwell, and Luke O'Malley disappointment KWS remained scoreless and the game finished 1-0.

An unfortunate result, but many positives to be taken from the second half especially.

Sports uniforms

Please be aware that Sports Uniform may NOT be worn for anything other than games. Not for PE, around school, drama etc.
Please ask your children not wear it around school, this wears out the uniform too quickly and replacement costs will increase sports fees.

Life Lessons through Sport

By Sarah Auld, Sports Chaplaincy New Zealand

JORDAN MAILATA IS A 6 FOOT 8 SAMOAN WHO GREW UP IN SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA. As a talented sportsman it soon looked like rugby league would provide opportunities for him. After a strong season in the South Sydney Rabbitohs Under 20’s, Mailata was hopeful he would be able to secure an ARL contract. Unfortunately, he was only offered a reserve grade contract. At that time Mailata’s agent made him aware of a new programme that provided a pathway for overseas athletes to try to make it into the NFL. Although Mailata had never played any American football and had only watched a handful of games, he agreed to give it a shot. He flew to America, was accepted and took part in the three-month programme. During the programme, Mailata achieved impressive results and just prior to the NFL draft, there were six different franchises interested in him. On day 3 of the draft he was signed to the Philadelphia Eagles. Against all odds Mailata had made it into the NFL. He went on to establish himself in the league and this year he played in the Superbowl. To try something new is to take a risk, and to take a risk means there is the possibility of failure. Mailata knew that he had never played a minute of American football and he knew that no one in that position had ever made it into the NFL, but he also knew that his size and skills were the perfect fit for the game. He knew there was risk, but he also recognized there was opportunity. When we are faced with opportunity and risk, we need to wisely weigh up the situation, not cowering to fear but not being foolish either. There are times when God calls us to take a brave step into the unknown, to push our boundaries and to go into new territory (Isaiah 54:2). We shouldn’t let fear of failure hold us back and rob us of an amazing opportunity.
PRAYER: Lord thank You for the opportunities that will come my way to try new things and be stretched. Help me to be wise and courageous, following Your lead.
