KingsWay School —

A Note from Jenny Harvey

Dear Parents and Caregivers

We are delighted to welcome you to the start of another exciting year on the Junior Campus. Three new staff members and 52 new students have joined us this year (including our New Entrants who have started school for the very first time!). Please do look out for any unfamiliar faces and welcome them into our school community.

The whole school Parent Meeting (2 March) and the Family Fun Night (10 March) are wonderful opportunities to meet and connect with other families in our school. I encourage you to make every effort to attend both these events.

Our new staff members are Mrs Pamela Birley, Mrs Natalie Cass and Mrs Danel Smit. We are excited about the many skills and the wealth of expertise these teachers will contribute to our learning community.

Please note that we have made some changes to the structure of our Primary Assemblies for 2021:

Fridays at 2:25pm in the JC Hall

  • Week 2: Totara Studio (Y1-2)
  • Week 3: No Assembly
  • Week 4: Kauri Studio (Y3-6)
  • Week 5: Whole Primary School: Led by the YR 4 cohort
  • Week 6: Totara Studio (Y1-2)
  • Week 7: No Assembly
  • Week 8: Kauri Studio (Y3-6)
  • Week 9: No Assembly
  • Week 10: Whole Primary School: Led by the YR 6 cohort
  • Week 11: No Assembly

Parents are reminded to read all the information we communicate to you through the teachers’ weekly letters/emails, the KingsWay School Newsletter and the School website as there are always events, trips and a range of opportunities being offered that you or your child may be interested in or need to know about.

We look forward to another year of partnering with you in the education of your children.

In His service

Parents getting messages to their child in school hours:

Parents wanting to get an urgent message to their child are asked to contact the Junior Campus office by 2.30pm at the latest.

Thank you for your consideration in the matter.

Parents of Prayer

We welcome all parents who would like to join our friendly Parent Prayer group to pray for our Primary School on Tuesdays at 9am in the Junior Campus staff room.

Reporting an Absentee

KingsWay School has a responsibility every day to account for all students who are enrolled. In a large school, this is a huge task and we would ask parents to support us in achieving this. Please report your child’s absence before 9.30 am.

Reporting a Student's Absence

It is a Ministry requirement to have a parent explanation of a student’s absence. This allows for the correct attendance code to be assigned. When your child is absent from school the school must be notified. You can do this either by:

1. By emailing absences@kingsway.school.nz, OR

2. Leave a message on the absentee line 09 427 0900 and enter 1 to leave your absentee message. Please state your name, your child’s name, class and reason for absence, OR

3. Absences can also be sent via the KingsWay School phone app.

To download the app, go to the App Store on your Apple or Android device and search SchoolAppsNZ. After downloading, open the app and search for KingsWay School. Once KingsWay School has been selected, your app will automatically open to the KingsWay School platform from now on.

If you email a teacher, please also copy in absences@kingsway.school.nz so we can ensure the attendance is marked as soon as possible.

Not reporting your child's absence either before or on the morning of their absence will result in a phone call to follow up the absence. This is a safety measure. An answer phone is available 24 hours a day. Leaving a message saves our office staff considerable time as we follow up all unexplained absences. If the absence is for more than one day, please advise this in your message.

If your child is absent from school for more than 5 days due to ill health, a medical certificate is required. Medical certificates are important to justify absence from school due to illness and can be handed in at the school office.

Where there is consistent and/or intermittent illness the school can also request a medical certificate. If it is appropriate and your child is eligible, you could apply for support from the Northern Regional Health School.

Children Arriving to School to Early

Our Primary School hours are from 8.55am-3.05pm. Children must NOT be dropped off at school before 8.30am and must leave the school grounds before 3.30pm. If your child requires before school or after school supervision please refer to our sKids (Safe Kids in Daily Supervision) programme which is held on the Junior Campus: www.skids.co.nz or email kingsway@skids.co.nz.

Health Centre Notice

Parents/caregivers are reminded to please keep their children home if they are not well. This is a Ministry of Education requirement. Parents/caregivers, whose children come to school with a heavy cold, sore throat or flu-like illness, will be contacted and asked to take their child home.

Please practise and reinforce the following at home with your children:

  • Frequent handwashing with soap and water and drying hands well or using hand sanitiser.
  • Coughing or sneezing into a tissue and disposing of the tissue in a bin.
  • Coughing into the elbow.
  • Washing hands after coughing, sneezing and blowing the nose.

Nut Allergy Policy

There are students with Life-Threatening Allergies in the Totara Studio (bottom studio).

It is already Kingsway Junior Campus policy to have no peanuts at school. We also request that you support these students and their families by keeping the Totara Studio completely Peanut and Tree nut free. Please ensure that all food sent with your child is free of peanuts and tree nuts (including almonds).

These students are highly allergic to nuts and may suffer anaphylaxis simply from contact with the allergen - on surfaces or airborne. We therefore request that everyone is very mindful of what they are eating and their hygiene practices before coming to school. For example, please give peanut butter, Nutella, nut bars etc as treats after school.

As per our policy, please remind your child that they are never to share their food and must wash their hands before and after eating. If you are wanting to bring food to class for a special occasion, e.g. birthday, please contact the teacher 48 hours prior.

We really appreciate your support in keeping all our students safe at the Junior Campus. Please encourage healthy choices in lunchboxes and do not send children to school with lollies etc.

Activity Costs

Activity Costs are now due for Primary School students. If you haven’t yet paid your child’s activity costs, please attend to this as soon as possible. Activity costs are for the year and cover your child’s extra cost that occur through the year eg class trips, workbooks, swimming and visiting performers.

School Lunch Orders

A friendly reminder to parents who order lunches for Primary children through the school tuck shop. Please add your child’s teacher code (eg 1NHE, 2MBA NOT seahorse, turtles etc) to your orders. This helps to reduce the time taken in sorting lunch orders. See teacher code below:
