A Note from Val Severin
This year, we welcomed many new students to our Year 5 group. Our learning has had a focus on welcoming them, introducing them to our KingsWay values and establishing our collaborative, co-operative culture. Whilst having had a few unexpected interruptions, we have enjoyed exploring what makes great relationships and grows sustainable friendships.
In Term 3, our topic called ‘Inner Fit and Fitting In’ encouraged us to think about how our responses and interactions with each other reflect the character of Jesus. Our Literacy learning involved developing the vocabulary needed to discuss and describe the characters encountered in Reading. These words helped us to develop the characters in our own writing.
A close look at a variety of Biographies provided us with historical examples of resilience, tenacity, faith, compassion and trust. We continued to develop our understanding of the characteristics and attributes needed to thrive in learning and social groups. Their faith and reliance on the Lord’s provision made ‘Corrie Ten Boom’ and ‘George Meuller’ ideal characters to explore.
Our Year 5 students have gladly embraced their service duties in support of the Year 6 leaders. After patiently waiting, the last group eagerly assumed their duties for Term 4. This is a practical way in which students can apply all that they have learned about servant leadership, being responsive to needs and making wise choices in their community.
In Matthew 5:16, we read: ‘In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.’ The words ‘SHOW’; ‘SHARE’ and ‘SHINE’ have guided our learning this year. We would like to share some poems about a rainy day which show how we shine when working together and sharing our ideas:
Small water droplets look like bombs
Falling out of a plane
The grey clouds look
Like a pack of wolves howling in the wind. (Ezra Beattie)
What a wonderful world it is
With droplets dancing like ballerinas
Pattering against windows
Being thrown down from greying clouds
Creating a soothing musical sound (Zech Kim)
We look forward to our last term in 2020 and continuing to seek ways in which we can Show, Share and Shine (reflecting God’s love for us) in all areas of our learning.

The Year Six Camp
The Year Six students arrived safe and sound to Camp Adair in the Hunua Ranges. They were straight into a world of adventure and activity: the fabulously muddy confidence course, raft building, water slide, and challenging climbing activities. Last night they did a bushwalk in the dark and the legendary 'Burma Trail' and enjoyed sitting around a campfire together. Camp is such a great time to see children grow in confidence and in their faith in God.

Activity Costs
Activity Costs are now due for Primary School students. If you haven’t yet paid your child’s activity costs, please attend to this as soon as possible. Activity costs are for the year and cover your child’s extra cost that occur through the year eg class trips, workbooks, swimming and visiting performers.
Parents of Prayer
We welcome all parents who would like to join our friendly Parent Prayer group to pray for our Primary School on Tuesdays at 9am in the Junior Campus meeting room.
Reporting an Absentee
KingsWay School has a responsibility every day to account for all students who are enrolled. In a large school, this is a huge task and we would ask parents to support us in achieving this. Please report your child’s absence before 9.30 am.
All details on HOW to report an absence can be found on our school website:
https://www.kingsway.school.nz/contact-us/reporting-an-absence
Children Arriving to School to Early
Our Primary School hours are from 8.55am-3.05pm. Children must NOT be dropped off at school before 8.30am and must leave the school grounds before 3.30pm. Health Centre Notice
Parents/caregivers are reminded to please keep their children home if they are not well. This is a Ministry of Education requirement. Parents/caregivers, whose children come to school with a heavy cold, sore throat or flu-like illness, will be contacted and asked to take their child home.
Please practise and reinforce the following at home with your children:
- Frequent handwashing with soap and water and drying hands well or using hand sanitiser.
- Coughing or sneezing into a tissue and disposing of the tissue in a bin.
- Coughing into the elbow.
- Washing hands after coughing, sneezing and blowing the nose.
Nut Allergy Policy
There are students with Life-Threatening Allergies in the Totara Studio (bottom studio).
It is already KingsWay Junior Campus policy to have no peanuts at school. We are now requesting that you support these students and their families by keeping the Totara Studio completely NUT FREE. Please ensure that all food sent with your child is free of peanuts and tree nuts (including almonds).
These students are highly allergic to nuts and may suffer anaphylaxis simply from contact with the allergen - on surfaces or airborne. We therefore request that everyone is very mindful of what they are eating and their hygiene practices before coming to school. For example, please give peanut butter, Nutella, nut bars etc as treats after school (not before).
As per our policy, please remind your child that they are never to share their food and must wash their hands before and after eating. If you are wanting to bring food to class for a special occasion, eg birthday, please contact the teacher 48 hours prior.
We really appreciate your support in keeping all of our students safe at the Junior Campus.

TUCK SHOP
A friendly reminder to parents who order lunches for Primary children through the school tuck shop. Please add your child’s teacher code (eg 1NHE, 2MBA NOT seahorse, turtles etc) to your orders. Please CLICK HERE to see the Tuck Shop's updated tuckshop menu.
New Speedbump at the Exit of Upper Carpark
A new speedbump has been installed near the exit of the top car park. Parents are asked to take care when driving through the car park areas, STOP before the footpath and look both ways for pedestrians before exiting onto the road.
Parents are encouraged to reverse into car parks so that they have good visibility when pulling out to exit the car park.
Students are not permitted to walk across the car park without an adult. Parents are to please meet their children on the footpath and walk with them back to the car.
Your patience and grace shown towards each other during the busy times before and after school are appreciated.
PLEASE NOTE: Access to the top car park (Kiss n Drop area) after school is for disabled parking ONLY. The top car park area will be closed from 3.30pm. sKids parents are to use the bottom car park area to collect their children.
Our PMP equipment sessions are in the hall on:
- Mondays from 9:55am – 10:35am & 1:55pm - 3:00pm
- Tuesdays from 2:20pm – 3:00pm
- Fridays from 9:20am - 10:35am
This ‘Station’ focusses on memory as an outcome. It provides young children with various means of identifying objects. There is the (1) Verbal instruction; (2) Visual connection (3) Kinaesthetic action.
Students are required to listen to the spoken word, identify the image it represents and step on individual images of objects in sequence.
It starts off with two or three objects but becomes more challenging as more objects are added. The activity is representative of the classroom. Teachers usually give more than one instruction at a time, which children usually need to complete in sequence, in order to achieve success. For example: “… please go to your locker, collect your bookbag and place it on your desk...” Missing even one step in the sequence will result in an incomplete task.
To volunteer to help with our PMP programme or for more information, please email Charlene van Vuuren, our KingsWay PMP teacher: Charlene.vanvuuren@kingsway.school.nz
