Senior School News and Notices

KingsWay School —

Please read the following newsletter for all news pertaining to Senior School students.

We hope that this letter finds you well and that you had a relaxing and refreshing Easter Holiday. This week is International Week and we celebrated the diversity of our school by starting the week with an International Assembly. Students took a leading role in this and shared insights about several nations and even sang a worship song in Chinese, Korean and Afrikaans. As always, this term has started quickly, with various trips and events all within the first two weeks.

Top House

Senior School Top House took place today from period 3 through to 6. Students came dressed in House colour mufti and competed in a number of team challenges throughout the day to foster fun, cooperation and communication across the Senior School. Images from the day have been posted on our school Facebook page.

Parents Evening

This Tuesday, May 7 we had the Senior School parents evening. Graeme Budler shared about Axis. This is a new online platform now available for parents that allows us access to material designed to facilitate understanding and discussion with teenagers. It covers topics such as technology, relationship and even pornography. Details about how to access Axis and the related materials are on their way.

We were also privileged to have a guest speaker from the Parenting Place, Nathaniel Kandregula. He spoke about Social Media. We heard about how culture is changing, and as parents and educators, we need to understand the world teenagers are navigating so we can be equipped to help guide them through it. A key insight he shared was that previously young people evaluated their self-worth and gauged if they were OK based on their peer group. Today, on social media, they are effectively allowing the whole world to measure their self-worth. They are comparing how well they’re doing with Instagram models and the very best ‘moments’ people choose to share, which largely explains their anxiety and sense of missing out. Nathaniel ended with a message of hope, however, saying that research still shows we, as parents, still hold major influence in young people’s lives and have the ability to instil a solid foundation for their self-worth—that they are loved and accepted unconditionally. He went further and said that by encouraging them into youth groups, the wider church family can help instil this message of acceptance and self-worth.

KingsWay Business Trip

The 2019 KingsWay Business trip to New York and London took place in the Term 2 holidays. Fifteen students traveled to the two financial capitals of the world, visiting some of the world’s largest businesses and hearing from New Zealander’s who work there. It was an amazing experience and the students got an insight into a wide range of different jobs as well as some great advice for their futures.

Anzac Day

James Hunter, Rogan Strachan and Megan Jones attended the ANZAC Day Civic Service at the Hibiscus Coast RSA, taking part in the parade and laying a wreath on behalf of the school. William Brightwell, a Kingsway student and also a member of the New Zealand Cadet Forces, Air Training Corps read the “Soldier’s Ode” in Maori. All of these students are to be commended on their respectful demeanor and the way in which they represented KingsWay school.
