A Note from Hannah Irons
This term, the Year 4 students are focusing on New Zealand Birds. We are specifically looking at how God’s creation is unique and purposeful.
For our Visual Arts unit, we decided to create a collaborative piece of art. Firstly, each student thought of a unique design for their feather. Once they had chosen their design, they used bright pastels to carefully decorate a feather. Every student worked hard to blend the colours that they thought would make the most impact.
Once the students had finished their feathers, the teachers collated them to make two large wings. Our Maori Whakatauki for this term is; Ahakoa he iti, he pounamu (Although it is small, it is precious). The students were able to see through this collaborative task, that every small feather worked together to create a masterpiece.
Another aspect of our learning this term was researching New Zealand Birds. The Year 4 students have worked hard to read reports on a wide range of birds in order to extend their existing knowledge. The teachers were blown away by the students' focus, interest and level of work produced in this learning task. We are looking forward to seeing the students create their own project on a bird of their choice!

Children are strongly encouraged to NEVER share food and always wash their hands before and after eating.
School Fun Run fundraiser – Year 0-9
Thanks to those who participated in the fundraising campaign. All sponsorship (online) and cash collected should have all come in by Wednesday this week. We have achieved a good result, considering this was the first time using an online platform. A final update will be available next term once costs have been deducted by the School Fun Run organisation for prizes and administration.
Students who set up an online page and raised at least $10 will be able to order prizes. Prize orders close next Friday 2nd October so make sure you get them in by then. Any further questions or if you have any issues with prize ordering, please email Raelene.Beguely@kingsway.school.nz
Primary Fun Day
Wow!! Last Friday 18 October, we had a great Fun Day at the Junior Campus. The students ran their fun runs with much excitement, and it was great to see their huge smiles. After the disappointment of having their cross country cancelled due to the second Covid lockdown, they were so happy to have their fun run, even running in the rain. Alongside this, there was opportunity to order a lunch pack which had a massive uptake. We raised over $2000 from the lunch alone which, along with our School Fun Run fundraiser, will go towards our playground slides project.
Thanks, so much to all those who helped make this day work so well - from Mr Barley organising the races, Mrs Severin showing us her skills on the BBQ, the lunch packing team and our amazing Year 9 helpers. Unfortunately, due to being in level 2.5, we couldn’t have any parents on site, but hopefully you can tell from the photos and your child’s reports how much fun the day was.
Special thanks to Countdown for providing the sausages, Pak n Save Silverdale for the discounted product and to Mike Pero Millwater for letting us use their awesome bouncy castle for the day.
God’s Closet
God’s Closet is a charitable organisation that distributes unnamed second-hand KingsWay uniform clothing, mufti clothing and any items left at school (eg lunch boxes/drink bottles) that were not collected at the end of each term for families in our community. If you are interested in enquiring about this free service to either donate or request assistance, please go to the Facebook page - God’s Closet Auckland N.Z.: https://www.facebook.com/Gods-Closet-Auckland-NZ-821483578193354 and private message Meg Grace.
There is also a new part of the charity that has just been set up called ‘God’s Pantry’. This section will collect healthy, storable (non-perishable) food items to donate to those in the Hibiscus Coast who are in need of food support. If you would like to donate to this part of God’s Closet, please also contact Meg through the Facebook page.
Return books to Junior Campus Library
Primary Parents and students, please look out for library books at home that must be returned.
Primary Netball
A huge thanks to all the amazing people, including Middle School students, who put their hand up to coach or manage a team this year. Unfortunately, the season was curtailed by Covid lockdowns. The teams had generated a bit of momentum and were really buzzing. Hopefully, next year will be different.

ASB Financial Literacy Programme
This week we had the ASB Financial Literacy Programme speaking to our Primary students. This Financial Literacy programme develops good money habits and can help set our students up well for the future. The skills taught through the ASB Bank GetWise put the fundamentals of managing money into four simplified areas from identifying needs and wants, learning to save, right through to budgeting. The dynamic approach by the ASB presenters kept the children engaged, encouraged them to ask questions and generated much fun and laughter.

- Tactical & Strategic thinking
- Prepare for Chess Tournaments against other schools

What happens in a Chess Power Coaching Programme?
Each session starts with a formal lesson; all players will learn a new strategy, idea or skill each week. Then they put those skills into practice with activities and games. All games are monitored and supervised by the coach who provides individual feedback along the way.
Throughout the programme, we reward kids that do well and encourage and support kids that are struggling. At completion of the programme we recognise each child with a certificate based on their performance.
